Hong Kong has been named the most expensive city in the world for housing, luxury products, and services. Despite the protests that besieged the city last year, the tourist destination famously known for its travel and shopping also holds the highest price tags for lodging, cars, business consultations, fine dining, events, and beauty services. The former British colony is the most expensive place to hire a lawyer, with a simple legal consultation setting you back $1,000 on average. The high demand and short supply of housing in a city of skyscrapers has driven property prices to unaffordable levels in recent years, reaching up to 19.4 times the average household income. However, prices of luxury homes and high-street shops are expected to fall by 10 to 30 percent in 2020. Even though property prices have started falling since 2019, Hong Kong remains one of the priciest locations for expats and locals alike, with a monthly rent in the business district costing well over $5,000.
