6. Loss of Drive and Interest in Everyday Activities

Another symptom apparent in patients with bipolar disorder is anhedonia, or “the lack of pleasure in doing things that they normally like doing.” To illustrate, a patient who normally enjoys watching sporting events can suddenly lose interest in them in profound ways.

For example: Normally, a person who purchased expensive floor-seat tickets to the final game of an NBA championship series where his team is playing, will move heaven and Earth and even quit his job, just to watch the game and avoid burning the money he spent. Now, if the same person were a bipolar patient going through a depressive state, it wouldn’t even matter to him if he lost millions of dollars on those tickets.
