Pictured floating around is Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. In 1983, California native Sally boarded the Space Shuttle Challenger as a Mission Specialist for a six-day satellite deployment and retrieval mission called STS-7. Aged 32 at the time, Ride also became the youngest American astronaut to travel in space, and as later revealed when she died, was also NASA’s first known LGBTQ astronaut, having been in a relationship with a female professional tennis player for almost 30 years.
