There is a stereotypical idea people generally come into conclusion to when they think of their grandfathers. It’s a gentle, elderly man who loves telling stories about his golden years, while sitting on the front porch swing with his cane, surrounded by his grandkids.  A very unconventional image of an elderly man though, would be someone who likes attending live rock concerts.

Wacken Open Air, also known as “the Metal Mecca” is the biggest three-day rock and heavy metal festival in Wacken en Schleswig-Holstein, located in the north of Germany. Some of this year’s line-up are: Anthrax, Prophets of Rage, and Slayer. With a yearly attendance of about 75,000 people from all over the world, last year’s festival was also attended by two elderly men who escaped their retirement home to join the hordes of head bangers.

Authorities reported that the pair was found about 25 miles in the concert grounds after going missing from their retirement home located in Dithmarscher.  Peter Berndt, an employee at the Itzhoe police department said that the two elderly men were believed to have travelled to Wacken Open Air by public transportation and walking most of the way.

According to the Deutsche Welle, it was the retirement home personnel that reported to the police when the pair had escaped. They were finally located in the concert grounds that at 3 a.m. Saturday looking ‘dazed and disoriented.”

“They were then taken to the medical tent on the festival site and were sent back by taxi at around 6:30 a.m.,” Berndt shared to the Washington Post last Monday. “We had to explain to them why they had to go home — but in the end, they went back voluntarily.”

In a press release, the officers in the patrol car that found the men said that they “were apparently intrigued with the metal festival.” The statement also mentioned that “of course, their disappearance was noticed at the nursing home and their swift return there was organized after police picked them up.”

A photo of the elderly rockers in the festival was posted on Twitter, to which Wacken Open Air reacted: “Seriously? How cool is that, please? You’re never too old to rock.”
