Arguably the most important step. Without a defined route, you might end up stuck at the airport wondering what to do. With regards to Komodo island, there are 3 main routes you can opt for.

The first route involves boarding an international flight to Jakarta. From Jakarta, take a domestic flight to Labuan Bajo airport which is also known as Komodo Airport. The flight takes approximately two and a half hours and once you land in Labuan Bajo; the trip from Labuan Bajo to Komodo is just a boat ride away.

The second route is similar to the first with the only difference being that you will take an international flight to Bali first. Once you get to Bali, board a domestic flight to Labuan Bajo which takes roughly an hour. Again, once you are in Labuan Bajo, there are countless ways of getting to Komodo because the town is the center for Komodo tours.

Finally, for the more adventurous type, one can choose to take a multi-day boat trip from Lombok to Komodo island. Often, this route is popular with backpackers.

Indonesia is a tropical climate, which means it sunny throughout the year and weather is not a hindrance. However, different seasons determine available activities, and therefore, you need to know what to expect so that you can pick the time of the year when your preferred activity is in high season.

If you prefer nature and the beach, then April to June is the time for you. At that time, the sea is clear and calm, and the landscape is a luscious green. July to August is the high season, and that means accommodation can be a problem because most people travel to the island during this period.

September to November is perfect for exploring marine life such as sperm whales, Manta Rays, Whale Sharks etc. Finally, starting January, the monsoon starts, which is characterized by lots of rain and sometimes flooding. As a result, most tour companies do not operate during January and February.

For ladies, it is important to note that you should avoid traveling to Komodo Island when you are on your period. The Komodo dragon is an aggressive predator that can smell blood from 12 miles away and launch an attack.

3. Pack The Appropriate Clothes and Don’t Forget Sun Protection

Exploring Komodo island involves a fair amount of trekking and hiking. Therefore, pack cotton-based clothes that will absorb sweat well, find comfortable shoes that will not hurt your feet during long stretches of walking and finally pack an assortment of swimwear.

Typically, the Komodo dragon will not attack without cause. However, you should avoid sudden movements that the dragon might interpret as aggression. Also, if something goes awry and a Komodo dragon starts chasing you, then run in a zigzag pattern.
