Vietnam is the easternmost country in the Indochina Peninsula. The capital Hanoi is located in the north, while Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the largest city, is in the south. In 1954, after the Vietnamese defeated the French in the First Indochina War, the country was divided into two rival states: the communist north, and the anti-communist south. This escalated into the Vietnam War, with extensive American intervention in support of the democratic south. The fall of Saigon saw US troops withdrawing and the North Vietamese victorious in 1975. North and south reunified under a socialist government in 1976.
Tourism is an integral element of the nation’s economy. In 2017, almost half of international arrivals were from other Asian countries, specifically China, Japan, and South Korea. The rest were from Europe, particularly Russia, and the US and Australia.
