The excess water will drop out, and the sock will stay moist, allowing for the plants, soil, and roots to leech out what water is needed for them to stay alive. Simply half-bury your wet sock bottle in the pot with the plant you want to keep alive, and rest assured that it will be okay for a least a couple of days.
