This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only the resting place of the saint its named after, but the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi was once a piece of property called the “Hill of Hell,” which was used as a place where criminals were put to death. After it was donated to the church, they began construction of the two churches that make up the site back in 1228, and it has since become one of the most visited and beloved pilgrimage sites through the years.
