Another symptom in children is when they have trouble breathing or when they cough incessantly. Because these blood cancer cells tend to affect the thymus, the gland at the base of the neck, they end up causing children to complain of difficulty breathing as a result. Also, when their lymph nodes become swollen, they end up pushing up against the windpipe, causing coughing and wheezing without actually having a cold or any phlegm. Although a cough and breathlessness doesn’t immediately mean leukemia, it can still be very serious and requires immediate medical attention.
