Another common symptom of strep throat is difficulty in swallowing, medically known as dysphagia. A patient suffering from a strep infection often experiences the tightening of the muscles on their throat as a reaction to the toxins released by the streptococcus bacteria, making swallowing a challenge.
Many patients feel a choking sensation on their throat, making eating, speaking and drinking almost impossible. To make this worse the sensation of choking also triggers the gag reflex, causing them to regurgitate acid, which further irritates the throat.
