Many American perceived Woodstock as an outrageous display of indulgence at a time of war. In one account, a young woman who lied to her parents about her destination, arrived from Boston to find a mind-boggling mass of people, tents, blankets, pot smoke, aromatic oils and nakedness. Its organizers were reported to have sold 186,000 tickets and ultimately an estimated 400,000 people showed up for the festival on farmland in Bethel. Thus, space, water and toilets were in short supply. There was an abundance of rain and mud. At that time, Americans saw Woodstock as a spectacle of spaced-out, skinny-dipping, promiscuous hippies.
