5. Cool, Free, and Muddy

Vogue

Prior to the late 1960s, you would not have seen a college-age guy with flowers stuck in his hair, or holding back his flowing locks with a pastel headband across his forehead. It was the epitome of cool. Amidst the romping in mud, as a New York Times editorial once put it, “little more sanity than the impulses that drive the lemmings to march to their deaths in the sea.” Woodstock, without a doubt, was pure indulgence! Nonetheless, there were no reports of violence. In one account, the local police chief called the crowd “the most courteous, considerate and well-behaved group of kids” he had ever encountered in his entire career. Indeed, peace, love and hippie-ness prevailed! In that moment, it was totally cool to be nice, free, and dirty!
