Her desire for a large family was greater than her love for Marcos Gutierrez. It seemed it was an obsession for Nadya. She was determined to go through with the IVF procedure, even all by her lonesome. She continued doing research on the procedure, and did not mind the costs and risks involved. She was willing to try anything to get the family she wanted. Luckily, the IVF was successful on her first try. In 2001, Suleman gave birth to her first child, a boy named Elijah.
