Working with mentally troubled patients may be rewarding, but it surely is difficult work. It was very strenuous for Nadya, but that was not the worst of it. On September 18, 1999, an incident at the hospital happened which proved disastrous for Nadya. A riot was started by about 20 patients, and Nadya tried to intervene and pacify them. A female patient flipped a wooden desk and it landed on Nadya’s back. Nadya suffered a herniated disc injury which affected her ability to work, and caused her a lot of pain and distress. She was able to file for workers’ compensation benefits, and was awarded $170,000. It was enough to help her get by for a while.
