With a degree in engineering and a doctorate in Mobile Communications from the University of Birmingham, Mo Ibrahim was wary and suspicious of those in the business industry but eventually became an unintended or accidental businessman. And a very successful one at that. Prior to Celtel, he founded MSI, a technology consultancy firm, which he eventually sold about $900 million in 2000. His foundation, which aims to improve political leadership and governance in Africa, awards the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. Worth at least $5 million plus a yearly stipend, it is considered the largest individual prize in the world.
