After graduating from the Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 1977, he got a loan from his uncle and started his own business, importing wholesale rice and sugar. But things really took off after he built his own plant and shifted from trading to manufacturing, expanding his business to the now publicly traded companies, with the Dangote Cement, the largest cement facility in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for 85% of his revenues, making $2.4 billion in 2017 alone.
