Places of worship are particularly strict about people who do not dress properly. This should be a general rule for any place you visit. Granted you may be a tourist, but it does not give you the privilege of not following dress codes. Baring too much skin is not allowed and considered very disrespectful and arrogant. Besides, dressing skimpily only makes you stand out as a naive tourist. Even slippers are frowned upon.
