Other travellers either are going your way, let’s say, from south to north, or coming toward you from north to south. So meeting fellow travellers from the opposite direction can be educational. They can tell you places to see, stay, eat and drink, etc., as you can do the same with your recommendations. It will prove to be very useful. Plus if they are from different countries, a little knowledge about their place goes a long way. And you made new friends as well. Who knows when you find yourself visiting their country. At least you have contacts who can assist you.
