Diagnosis Of Dizziness

In most cases of dizziness, your doctor will first ask you about your symptoms and any medications you’re currently taking then perform a physical examination. Your doctor may conduct hearing and balance tests to check how you walk and maintain your balance and how well the major nerves of your central nervous system are functioning. These tests may include the following:
• Eye movement testing. Your doctor will assess the path your eyes take when tracking a moving object.
• Head movement testing. Your doctor will perform the Dix-Hallpike maneuver if he or she suspects your dizziness is caused by benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
• Rotary chair testing. Your doctor will monitor and record your eye movements as you sit on a rotating, computer-controlled chair.
• Posturography. Your doctor will use this technique to identify which parts of your balance system you rely on the most and which parts may be causing you problems.
• Blood tests. Your doctor may order other tests to check for infection as well as the condition of your heart and blood vessels.
If your healthcare provider suspects you are suffering from a stroke or a concussion, he or she may immediately order a CT scan or an MRI.
