Dizziness Caused By Pregnancy

Mother & Baby

Elevated hormones that cause your blood vessels to relax and dilate is the main cause of dizziness in pregnancy. While this helps increase blood flow to your baby, it also causes your blood pressure to change, often resulting in hypotension and temporary dizziness. You may also feel dizzy because of lower levels of blood sugar as your body adapts to changes in your metabolism. You’re more prone to dizziness when you’re pregnant if you’re anemic or if you have varicose veins. Dizziness is also expected if you suffer from extreme nausea and vomiting (morning sickness) during your pregnancy.
You may experience dizziness during the second trimester of pregnancy as your expanding uterus puts pressure on blood vessels. Dizziness is also common in the later stages of pregnancy, especially when you lie on your back and the baby’s weight presses on your vena cava, the large vein that returns blood to your heart from other parts of your body.
Contact your doctor if you experience constant or persistent dizziness during pregnancy, especially if it is accompanied by vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, blurred vision, headaches, or heart palpitations.
