Dizziness Caused By Inner Ear Disorders

Your sense of balance depends on the combined input from the different parts of your vestibular system, namely your eyes which help determine your body’s position and movements, your sensory nerves which send messages to your brain about your body’s position and movements, and your inner ear which houses sensors that help you maintain awareness of your position when you’re moving. With inner ear problems, your brain receives signals that are inconsistent with what your eyes and sensory nerves receive. When your brain tries to resolve that confusion and inconsistency between signals, vertigo results.

Common inner ear disorders that can cause dizziness include:
• Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which is triggered by a rapid change in head movement, causes a brief but intense false sense that you’re spinning or moving. It is the most common cause of vertigo.
• Vestibular neuritis is a viral infection of the vestibular nerve that may also cause intense, constant vertigo.
• Meniere’s disease involves the excessive buildup of fluid in your inner ear. It brings about sudden episodes of vertigo that may last several hours.
