Confusion, also called disorientation, is a symptom that makes it difficult for you to think clearly, focus, or make decisions. An extreme state of sudden confusion is referred to as delirium. Delirium, which may come on quickly, within hours or days, can be a sign of many health problems. Dementia, on the other hand, is a progressive condition that causes a decline in brain function over months or years, affecting memory, judgment, behavior, and ability to perform everyday functions.
Confusion can also be caused by certain medications, substance abuse, an infection, or an injury. It’s especially important that you immediately seek emergency medical care when confusion and dizziness follow a head injury or trauma because this may indicate a possible concussion. Other symptoms to look out for are clammy skin, shivering, fever, headache, irregular breathing, rapid heartbeat, slurred speech, or weakness on one side of the body.
