Dizziness Caused By Medications

Certain drugs list dizziness as a possible side effect. It’s a particularly common side effect of antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, diuretics, muscle relaxants, pain relievers, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and some antibiotics. Drugs used to treat diabetes (insulin or oral tablets) may cause faintness if they lower your blood sugar levels too much. Likewise, blood pressure-lowering medications may cause dizziness if they excessively lower your blood pressure.

If you’re taking any of these medicines and it’s making you dizzy or tired, consult with your doctor and ask if you can lower the dose or switch to a different drug:
• Antidepressants, such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or trazodone (Desyrel)
• Anti-seizure or anti-epileptic drugs, such as gabapentin (Neurontin), pregabalin (Lyrica), or sodium valproate (Depakote)
• Muscle relaxants, such as cyclobenzaprine (Fexmid) and metaxalone (Skelaxin)
• Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve)
• Sleeping pills such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), eszopiclone (Lunesta), temazepam (Restoril), or zolpidem (Ambien)
• Medicines that lower blood pressure, such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, or diuretics
