Since pneumonia causes an accumulation of thick mucus or pus, it usually makes it harder to breathe due to all the coughing and wheezing. And when shortness of breath, or breathlessness occurs, it can be incredibly scary, making one feel like they are being suffocated. With pneumonia, coughing can be so bad that it causes one to lose their breath for seconds at a time. This usually has a spinoff reaction of a rapid pulse as well, both from the lack of oxygen and the fear that tends to happen because of not being able to breathe normally. This is yet another common symptom that should not be ignored.
