Aside from foods high in purine content, you also need to avoid foods high in fructose. Sugar does not only add inches to your waistline, increasing your risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, consuming too many teaspoons of sugar, particularly high-fructose corn syrup, can also set off a painful attack of gout. Fructose is a natural sugar found in fruits and honey. It is metabolized differently from glucose because as your body breaks down fructose, chemical compounds called purines are released into your bloodstream, raising your levels of uric acid.
High-fructose corn syrup is used in many pre-packaged and processed foods, such as breakfast cereals, baked goods, candies, coffee creamer, frozen junk foods, granola and cereal bars, nutrition bars, ice cream, sweetened yogurt, jam and jelly, salad dressing, sauces and condiments, and even boxed dinners. If you have gout, you may want to check nutrition labels when you are grocery shopping and skip buying products with corn syrup.
