Fructose- and sugar-sweetened beverages can also increase your risk of gout and gout attacks. Even though these sugary drinks are not rich in purine, they can raise your uric acid levels by accelerating several cellular processes. In one study of over 125,000 participants, researchers found that individuals who consumed the most fructose increased their risk of developing gout by 62%. Another study showed that men who drink two or more sodas a day have an 85% higher risk of developing gout than men who drink no more than one soda a month.
The next time you’re feeling thirsty, don’t grab that bottle of soda, juice, or fruit-flavored drinks. These drinks will raise your uric acid levels within minutes. Also, avoid energy drinks and sports drinks when you’re working out because a lot of them contain high-fructose corn syrup that can trigger a gout flare-up. If plain water does not encourage you to drink enough to stay hydrated, try switching to flavored water, diet soda, or real fruit juices. You may also drink low-fat milk, coffee, and tea but in moderation.
