Believe this to be a fact, he was able to avoid the Vietnam War draft due to four student deferments and one medical deferment. His doctors diagnosed him with bone spurs which exempted him from military service in Vietnam. Well lucky for him then. Was it really because he was anti-Vietnam War, or because he was afraid to fight in the Vietnam War? Your guess is as good as ours. It is something to die for your country, if you are defending your homeground. But fighting a fight which is not American in the first place is quite different.  Whatever the case may be, being able to avoid the draft takes some kind of smarts.
