Steam coming from food shows that it is hot and newly cooked. Seems it adds to make the food more appetizing for many. But obviously, food being photographed can’t stay hot for long, and we know that it takes time to get the perfect shot. So, steam is faked for the photo shoot in different ways. It is not surprising that some 20 or so years ago, there would be a guy blowing cigarette smoke through a straw behind the product being shot. But in recent years, smoking has been discouraged as it is unhealthy, including second-hand smoke, food photographers have relied on other ways to create the illusion of steam. They may use a hand steamer, a microwaved sponge, or incense sticks. But, they can always make it digitally to avoid all the hassle, and make it better than real steam.
