Lucille and Desi had been married for quite some time before the couple actually had children. It was a tough road and they even miscarried a few times before their daughter was born. So when she got pregnant, the writers decided to write it into the show, but not without hesitations. Back then, being pregnant on television was incredibly taboo so the producers made sure to use words that wouldn’t be considered controversial. The words “pregnant” and “pregnancy” were not allowed to be used, so they changed it to “expecting” instead. They even had a rabbi, priest and a minister double check their scripts to make sure that there was nothing in the script that would offend the audience.
