Like any other television show, they had to look for sponsors to get them the kind of funding they needed to get the show off the ground. It was tough at first but eventually, they managed to get Philip Morris to sponsor the sitcom, with conditions of course. In order to honor their contract with the tobacco bigwig, the couple had to be seen smoking Philip Morris cigarettes on the show as much as possible. Although Lucille was a big smoker, she preferred Chesterfield cigarettes to Philip Morris. So one of the gofers would empty a pack of Philip Morris and replace them with Chesterfields. Of course producers never wanted anyone in on that little secret!
