Athens-born Paraskevi Papachristou is a Greek athlete who competes in the triple jump and long jump, first earning gold in the European U23 Championships in 2009 and 2011. The then 23-year-old was set to compete in the 2012 Olympics but an “insensitive” comment made through social media regarding the West Nile virus by the Greek athlete led to her being withdrawn from the Greek national team just two days away from the opening ceremony. This did not deter her from pursuing the sport, and finally made the Olympic team in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She only placed eighth but bounced back in the 2018 European Championships and 2019 European Team Championships, winning gold in both meets.
