One of the most offensive things you can ever say to an Irish is mistaking that the country is part of the United Kingdom as they have fought hard to gain their independence. There is Northern Ireland, which is composed of six counties and is part of the UK, and separate from the Republic of Ireland. Avoid using the term “British Isles” altogether.
