When you engage in a conversation with the locals, don’t use icebreaker questions like, “Do you know Patrick from Dublin?” You get the idea. It’s annoying for them to get asked if they know someone from their town or city, as if the place is so small that they’re expected to know everyone. You may be particularly tempted to ask this question if you trace some ancestry in the country and try to establish familiarity by asking that question, but it won’t create the desired effect.
