Queen Victoria’s White Ensemble

The first bride on our list who took the concept of wedding gowns too far was none other than Queen Victoria. This bride made such an impression that nearly 180 years after her wedding, her example of wearing white is still considered “the done thing” or mandatory by many brides. Her color choice had nothing to do with purity, either. She chose to wear white mostly because it was the ideal color to highlight the delicate lace of her gown. Victoria actually put more thought into the symbolism of the materials, rather than the color the dress itself — choosing satin woven in the Spitalfields, which was the historic center of the silk industry in London. She also chose handmade Honiton lace in order to boost the lace industry among the elite. The lace pattern was said to have been destroyed after work was completed on the gown so that the template could not be copied. The gown also had orange blossoms and an 18-foot-long train.
