When Lukyanova’s pictures first circulated on the internet in 2013, they quickly became viral. Her look seemed so out-of-this-world to so many people, that people legitimately believed that she was a hoax. In 2013, social media was not as widespread or integral to daily life as it is today — nor were there #nofilter or #wokeuplikethis posts that people could share to convince people that they were real. Eventually, Lukyanova was proven real when a journalist from respected publication GQ Magazine traveled to the Ukraine to meet her.
