Don’t Try Driving In Guatemala

Okay, some tourists prefer to rent a car and drive around to visit sites. While it definitely is more comfortable, you can also take your time. But there are downsides to driving around. First of all, you are not familiar with the area and terrain. Outside the cities, roads are often unmaintained and dangerous. Aside from potholes and crumbling earth due to erosion, landslides are frequent. There are times where part of the road will just erode into the ravine along mountain roads. In the cities, traffic laws are basically non-existent. Drivers don’t follow them, and change lanes frequently with wild abandon. Better not risk an accident.
