Never Photograph Locals Without First Asking Permission

In most places this should be a rule. Common courtesy dictates that you don’t invade the privacy of another. Taking photos of locals without asking permission is considered rude and disrespectful. In Guatemala, it could also prove to be dangerous. There is an old belief that having your photo taken without your consent means that the photographer is taking your soul. Superstitions are taken very seriously. Another thing, there are rumors in Mayan communities that foreigners intend to steal their children and sell them abroad. This makes them wary of tourists, especially those taking photographs. A Japanese tourist was killed by a village mob after taking pictures of idigeous women and their children in a market.
