Muggers and other criminals roam the cities, especially in the capital city of Guatemala City. Never venture out at night if possible. If you do, stay in brightly lit places with lots of people. Should you be unfortunate to encounter a mugger, don’t resist or put up a fight. It is not worth your life. Most of these muggers will not hesitate to kill you for your wallet or watch. They do not fear going to jail. Most of them came from jail gangs anyway. Also you never know if they are acting alone. Most have lookouts and backup should they need it. So unless you are Jackie Chan, stay safe and let them take what they want. That is why you should never bring all your cash and credit cards with you.
