Unlike other poverty-stricken countries where policemen are scammers and thieves in uniforms, Guatemala is surprisingly different. The country has a police department dedicated to keeping tourists safe and assisting them in any way. They are called the Politur. This is one of the more pleasant facts about Guatemala. A police force you can really rely on, and not fear. They will go out of their way to help you if you need help. Across the border in Mexico is a different story. So while in Guatemala, enjoy the protection of the police force. Just remember, they are only present in areas frequented by tourists, you may not find them around in non-tourist places.
