Before falling in love and getting married to wife Ellen DeGeneres, Portia struggled with revealing her true identity. During the Golden Globes when ‘Arrested Development’ was nominated, she told in the interview: “When I really, truly came out was at the Golden Globes.” She added, “that was the first time that we actually stepped out together as a couple, but for me, it was the first time that I’d stepped out as a gay woman, really.” Portia once expressed that she considered it “strange” to be gay at the time as no notable or high-profile lesbians were “out” at the time. However, she expressed “For me being honest about who I was, coming out, being gay, starting today, that was a huge turning point for me.”
