Chanov

The Chanov housing projects are located on the outskirts of Most, about a kilometer from the new city, in the north-west part of Bohemia. The housing estates were built by the Czechoslovak Communist authorities in the late 70s to house most of the Romany families that lived in the old city of Most, which was demolished to extract the brown coal deposits that lay below. Not intended to be a purely Romany community, the other residents who couldn’t get along with their new neighbors left, and Chanov became a “Gypsy ghetto.”
