When Phil Jackson took over as the coach for the Lakers in 1999, Bryant’s fortunes would improve. After steady improvements so far, the duo with Shaquille O’Neal formed the legendary guard-center combination. Plus Jackson’s triangle offense he used to win 6 championships for the Chicago Bulls The Lakers became once again the team to beat. They won the NBA championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002. In the 2000 Finals against the Indiana Pacers, Kobe injured his ankle in the 2nd quarter of game 2 by landing on Jalen Rose’s foot (Rose later admitted to intentionally place his foot under Kobe). Kobe did not return to the game, and also missed game 3. In game 4, he led the Lakers to an OT victory as O’Neal fouled out. He scored the winning shot in the 120-118 victory.
