Kobe was born in Philadelphia on August 23, 1978. He is the youngest of 3 children, and only son of former NBA player Joe Bryant and Pamela Cox Bryant. His parents named him after Kobe beef of Japan, seeing it featured on a restaurant menu. When Kobe was 6 years old, his father retired from the NBA and moved his family over to Italy to continue playing professional basketball. Kobe started playing when he was just 3 years old. Undoubtedly, the LA Lakers were his favorite team. His grandfather would send him videos of NBA games. While in Italy, he began to seriously play basketball. During summers, he would go back to the US to play in a basketball summer league.
