While his basketball skills and SAT score of 1080 would have ensured admission to any college he chose, Kobe decided on trying for the NBA directly, just as Kevin Garnett did in the 1995 NBA draft. Prior to the 1996 draft, Kobe scrimmaged against former Laker players Larry Drew and Michael Cooper, and impressed then Laker manager Jerry West. After some strategic trades and drafting, the Lakers signed up Kobe, who at 17, had to have his parents cosign the contract with the team. Kobe signed a 3-year rookie contract for $3.5 million. His dream to play for the Lakers was now realized. The start of the legend was now unfolding.
