Bryant had a spectacular high school basketball career at Lower Merion High School, in the Philadelphia suburb of Lower Merion. He played for the varsity team as a freshman, being the first freshman in decades to start for the school’s varsity team. The following 3 years saw him play all 5 positions, and during his junior year, averaged 31.1 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists. He was named Pennsylvania Player of the Year, and also earned a fourth team Parade All-American nomination, which attracted many college recruiters. Needless to say, Kobe earned several awards including being named Naismith High School Player of the Year, a McDonald’s All-American, Gatorade Men’s National Basketball Player of the Year, and a USA Today All-USA First Team player. He ended his high school basketball stint as Southeastern Pennsylvania’s all time leading scorer with 2,883 points, beating both Wilt Chamberlain and Lionel Simmons.
