By 1989, Swango was released from prison. With a sketchy past and a police record, many assumed that he would be banned from practicing medicine ever again. Well, they were mistaken. He again found work and slipped through the cracks. He worked as a counselor at a state career development center. Then he left when he was caught doing something else during work. He then became a laboratory technician. It was during this time that his colleagues consistently complained of stomach pains. No one suspected him. In fact, one of the nurses fell in love with him.
