Indians truly believe in respecting their elders so never call one of them by their first name if you want to follow the proper custom. And this isn’t just for elders, but people that hold certain positions like teacher or boss, you can refer to them as “Sir” or “Madam.” The younger generation can also address those that might be the same age as their parents by “Auntie” or “Uncle” if they don’t know their last name. It’s just the way things are practiced in India to show the proper respect.
