Germany, officially known as the Federal Republic of Germany, is the most populous member state of the European Union with around 83 million inhabitants. It is also the 2nd most populous state in Europe, next to Russia. It covers an area of 357,386 square kilometers. Its capital is Berlin.
After the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Germany went through a dictatorship, which led to the annexation of Austria, World War II and the Holocaust. After the end of WWII, 2 new German states were founded – West Germany, formed from the American, British, and French occupation zones, and East Germany from the Soviet occupation zone. The Berlin wall divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Germany was reunified on October 3, 1990.
