Puerto Ricans have the right to bear arms like their compatriots in the mainland U.S. and with hurricane Maria in late 2017 causing massive damage and power outages and subsequent reduction of police officers, gun ownership has jumped by 60%. Add to this the unemployment that has caused a spike in the crime rate, with half of homicides reportedly being drug-related, many Puerto Ricans have resorted to arming themselves.
