It is the general rule almost anywhere, that the left side of the escalator is for people to pass if they are in a hurry. So for those who are not in a hurry, stay on the right side and enjoy the ride. Usually there are signs for those unaware of this rule. Please follow them carefully. UK locals like to race up or down the left-side of the escalator. Most of them can’t wait because they are in a hurry. You may get shouted at or shoved by normally polite Brits .
